Report From 2nd Reputable NHL Insider Links Atlantic Division Dark Horse to Leafs' Mitch Marner

There's no question that the Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the most interesting teams to track this summer, not only because of the comments about a DNA change from GM Brad Treliving, but also because of the impending Mitch Marner UFA decision.

There have been a number of reports linking the former 4th overall pick to both Eastern Conference and Western Conference clubs, and the most recent report doesn't even link Marner to a contending team, but rather, several rebuilding ones.

Last week, The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta suggested that Marner may become a prime target for the other Ontario club, the Ottawa Senators.

Former long-time Sportsnet analyst and NHL Insider Jeff Marek, ex-partner on Elliotte Friedman's "32 Thoughts: The Podcast", shares Pagnotta's insights and has deemed the Senators a real threat to attempt to lure Marner out of Toronto as well.

Marner just broke 100 points for the first time in his career this past season, but a lukewarm showing in the post-season may very well be the straw that broke the camel's back in Toronto -- especially his disappearing act against Florida late in the series.

It remains to be seen whether Marner would even entertain the idea of signing in Ottawa, especially given the longstanding rivalry with the Senators, but if the Sens end up putting together the most aggressive contract offer, anything is possible.
