A pair of popular Maple Leafs podcasters have dug their heels in over a heated debate about Auston Matthews that has spanned several seasons.

It's almost hard to believe that Auston Matthews is just one year removed from leading the NHL circuit in goals after he deposited 69 tallies in 2023-24.
However, due to injuries, Matthews managed just 33 goals this past season, which is a considerable drop-off of 36 goals from the year prior. Nevertheless, a healthy Matthews is as dangerous as they come, and Nick Alberga and Jay Rosehill from the Leafs Morning Take took a moment this week to remind NHL fans of that fact.
Earlier on their show, Alberga and Rosehill dove deeper into why Matthews is the best goal scorer in the NHL, with all due respect to Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl, whom many believe is the league's premier goal scorer.
He's not, I'm sorry to break it to you, it's Auston Matthews. The guy scored 69 goals in one season, he's the best goal scorer pound for pound, it's not even close.

Draisaitl is a great goal scorer, don't get me wrong, he gets 60 routinely, but there's nobody that scores like Matthews in this league right now, not even the great Alex Ovechkin.
Rosehill then joined in by saying that it's high-time for Matthews to start scoring those goals when it matters the most, when the situation requires it, and of course, in the playoffs.
I need him to do it at crunch time, I need him to do it on command when it 's tough. I need him to do it in the playoffs, and I need him to shake off whatever was going on this season... Like he couldn't shoot the puck.

Alberga finished off by affirming that Draisaitl might be the most clutch player in the league after his recent performance in the playoffs, but pound for pound as goal scorers, no one is better than Matthews.
If you're talking about who is more clutch, it's night and day Draisaitl... especially in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and you can't make that case for Auston Matthews.

Matthews will have a lot more pressure on him this season with the loss of Mitch Marner to Vegas. However, if healthy, it's not out of the realm of possibility that we see him topple the 60-goal barrier and reclaim his throne as the league's best goal scorer once again.
