Former Maple Leafs winger Mitch Marner attempts to save face with Leafs Nation during his post-game interview with Scott Oake during HNIC's 'After Hours' segment.

The Mitch Marner saga is not quite over, despite him having left Toronto for greener pastures this summer, effectively ending his 9-year tenure with the Maple Leafs.
From comments made by Marner, his agent, and his security detail during the off-season, as well as comments coming from the Leafs' side of things, it was a very messy breakup.
Things eventually subsided for a little while, but with the Vegas Golden Knights playing the Calgary Flames on Hockey Night in Canada last night, Marrner was the feature guest on Scott Oake's 'After Hours' segment, fielding questions about his Leafs tenure.
One of the questions posed by Oake was regarding Marner's departure from the Maple Leafs and how difficult the decision had to have been. His response sounded genuine, but it certainly felt like a way for him to save face with the fans that he left in the dust.
Very difficult, there was a couple, definitely, sleepless nights, just thinking of a massive decision, not only for me but for my family, my wife, my son as well. It was super tough, it was not an easy decision at all. Tough moments at the time, but tried to make the best move that we thought was going to best for our family going forward.
Of course, it must have been difficult for Marner to decide to leave the only organization he had known, let alone the team he rooted for when he was young. However, it did seem like he made up his mind well before the season ended, making the comments feel a little disingenuous.
His sign-and-trade with Vegas was a big moment for both parties as Marner was able to start a new chapter in his career alongside Jack Eichel and Mark Stone, whereas the Leafs looked to change their identity through various depth additions.
I'm sure Leafs Nation doesn't need another reminder of Marner and why he left the Maple Leafs, but it will certainly add to the atmosphere when he makes his return to the Scotiabank Arena on the 23rd of January.
