Brad Treliving aimed to fix the Maple Leafs' depth by adding a trio of forwards, but early struggles have the off-season gamble looking more like a costly misfire.

Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving made three interesting trades this past off-season, including acquiring 24-year-old Matias Maccelli from the Utah Mammoth to begin the overhaul of his forward group.
The following day, Treliving shipped star forward Mitch Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights for Nicolas Roy, before acquiring Dakota Joshua from the Vancouver Canucks shortly thereafter.

Spreading the Wealth, Waiting For Results

Unable to replace Marner with another star, the Leafs opted to spread the wealth throughout their forward group in the hopes that it would give them a more balanced offensive approach.
Unfortunately, through six games, that has yet to happen, with the trio combining for just 1 goal and 4 points, and many are starting to wonder if the Leafs misfired in their attempt to add depth instead of another high-profile player.
The emergence of Easton Cowan on the Leafs' top line and a a lower-body injury to Scott Laughton have certainly played a role in the lack of production for the trio, but they were expected to have much more of an impact through the first six games of the season.

Is Patience Wearing Thin For Leafs' New Trio?

On Saturday, Steven Lorentz made his return to the lineup after a brief absence with an upper-body injury. To make room for him, head coach Craig Berube chose to scratch veteran Calle Jarnkrok in a move that faced harsh criticism from fans.
Having scored three times in five games to begin the season, fans questioned why one of the more productive Leafs was taken out of the lineup over someone like Joshua, who has just one assist, or Nicholas Robertson, who reportedly still wants out in Toronto.
Without question, the Leafs need more from their main summer acquisitions -- Maccelli especially, as the gifted playmaker has received top-six minutes fairly consistently to begin the year.
For Roy, whose offensive instincts are underrated, and Joshua, who is a big, menacing presence in the lineup and an adept penalty killer, at least they're able to provide something outside of scoring. Maccelli, however, will be leaned upon and will need to rise to the occasion.
