During his season-ending presser, Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving opened up and about the season-long injury issues that plagued captain Auston Matthews during the 2024-25 season.

One major talking point this season was regarding the health of team captain Auston Matthews. For awhile, we were left out of the loop and his mysterious trip to Germany didn't help to dissuade anyone's concern. Eventually, he missed out on 15 regular season games, but it was apparent that he was playing through something.
At today's press conference, GM Brad Treliving opened up about a lot of topics, which included Matthews' injury. Many were curious as to why he wasn't given proper time off to let the injury heal, but Treliving believed they gave him the attention and adequate time off to deal with the ailment.
"We have guys playing through things, as everybody does. In Auston's case, he injured himself in camp... We're never going to put a player in a position where it's going to make it worse. He worked through it. Now, that's not a case of us saying, 'Auston, get out there and make it worse.' He got time."

Brad Treliving Reiterates That Auston Matthews Was Able to Play Through the Injury, Despite the Ailment Effecting His Game

When pressed about his availability for the 4 Nations Face-Off coming off the heels of a lengthy absence for the club, Treliving reiterated that he was able to play through it and they did their due diligence on the effects.
"He was able to play through it. When he came back and started playing from time off, it was better. There would be times when it would flare up. He was able to play with it. Like I said, it wasn't something that we felt by playing he was going to put himself in a really bad position, short or long-term."

Ultimately, it was a tough decision for both player and team, but Treliving gives Matthews all the credit in the world for gutting through the injury all season and into the playoffs, while still piling up goals and points.
"We were never going to put him in a position where he's playing through something that became worse. We managed it through the year... And it's a credit to Auston. I thought he was terrific."

The prevailing opinion is that Matthews should be ready for training camp this season as he looks to propel the Toronto Maple Leafs to further heights in his second season as team captain.
