Maple Leafs rookie Easton Cowan was the subject of a dirty, dangerous hit from Predators forward Ozzy Wiesblatt on Tuesday and shared his honest reaction to the questionable play following his team's big win.
The Leafs are back in the win column after popping off for 7 goals against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday in a 7-4 win on home ice to move to 2-2-0 on the season.
For Easton Cowan, the impressive play continued, with the 20-year-old Memorial Cup MVP picking up right where he left off from his NHL debut, this time netting his first career NHL point in the win.
Thankfully, Cowan was able to avoid any serious injury on the play, and popped right back up to his feet, casting a glare in Wiesblatt's direction before skating off.
After the win, Cowan met up with new Leafs host Ryan Leslie to discuss the win. He also touched on the play that led to the Wiesblatt's penalty, brushing it off as "just hockey", even though it wasn't exactly a hockey play.
I feel like I've been hit a lot, which is good, but I wasn't really expecting that. I mean, I was just trying to chase down F3 and kind of got hit in the net, but whatever. That's hockey, it happens, and it drew a penalty, so that's good.
The Leafs did respond to the hit in the moment, with
Chris Tanev skating over to Weisblatt to shove him into the glass and have some words with him, but that's where the extracurriculars ended as Wiesblatt was ushered off to the penalty box.
There's a good chance that, since the hit occurred away from the play, that Weisblatt could receive a call from the NHL's Department of Player Safety on Wednesday. If not, perhaps he'll be issued a fine for the hit, which wasn't a routine hockey play, as much as Cowan wanted to brush it off as such.
