"During his year end press conference, Toronto Maple Leafs' general manager Kyle Dubas said his number one priority was getting the Mitch Marner contract done. However all indications are pointing to another possible long dragged out negotiation similar to the William Nylander fiasco. In his latest "31 Thoughts" column, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that the two sides are about $2million apart on an AAV and he doubled down on his latest podcast. Friedman said that the Leafs are "disappointed it's gotten to this point" and didn't think getting a deal done with a "Toronto kid" who wants to play for the Leafs would be so difficult. If you put everything that Friedman is putting out there together, it sounds like that unlike Auston Matthews or John Tavares, the Leafs are expecting Marner to take a huge discount to stick around in Toronto for the next couple of years.
