The Leafs took to the ice on Monday morning for an NHL roster practice, and there was one pretty significant surprise in the bottom six in the form of Easton Cowan.

While the Maple Leafs are hesitant to publicly comment on whether or not Easton Cowan has made the NHL club the Leafs' 2023 first-round pick has done nothing but impress in training camp and in his slate of pre-season games.
Not only has Cowan done all the little things that Craig Berube has asked him to do, but he has seemingly found a spot on the fourth line with Scott Laughton and Steven Lorentz, which was highlighted by the trio's 8-point night for the trio on Tuesday last week.
His work ethic and willingness to adapt his game to the role he is given has led to the Memorial Cup MVP joining the Leafs' NHL level practice on Monday morning before they head off to Muskoka for their annual team building trip.
Joining the 'NHL only' practice is one thing, but Cowan took to the ice in a white jersey and lined up with his aforementioned linemates, Lorentz and Laughton, while veterans David Kampf, Calle Jarnkrok and young Nick Robertson all wore grey 'scratches' jerseys.

Has Easton Cowan's Consistency Helped Him Land a Role in Leafs' Bottom Six?

Cowan's play in training camp has received rave reviews from his teammates, including captain Auston Matthews, but it may ultimately be his willingness to put in the work on both sides of the puck that has earned him a roster spot -- for now.
The 20-year-old hasn't made any glaring mistakes thus far, has kept things simple and made the responsible plays consistently, which is something Robertson continues to struggle with and likely why he is once again on the outside looking in.
Of course, it doesn't hurt that Cowan has found instant chemistry and success with Laughton and Lorentz, adding a bit more skill to a physical and grinding fourth line.
There are just two pre-season games remaining for the Leafs and who plays in which game will be an indication of whether or not Cowan has officially earned a spot or not.
Even if the Leafs ultimately assign him to the AHL, he likely won't spend much time with the Marlies before he joins the big club.
