The Maple Leafs secured an important Game 1 win over the Ottawa Senators, but former captain John Tavares was not entirely pleased with the team's efforts.
After taking a cross-check to the neck, adding a goal and an assist in the Leafs' 6-2 win Sunday night, former Leafs captain John Tavares made some surprising comments regarding the play of the Leafs after the first game of the 'Battle of Ontario'.
Tavares could have simply sat back and enjoyed the victory in silence, as his typical, stoic self. However, he chose to offer up some thoughts that perhaps his team has more to give after the 6-2 win.
"It was intense. It was a battle, it's called Battle of Ontario for a reason," Tavares said post-game. "It was a hard-fought game, obviously a lot of good things we did to put ourselves in a good spot to get the result we want, but we know we can be a lot better. As the series develops, we'll have to continue to improve our game and execute, and look at the things we did well."
"Playing physical, winning battles, winning races, 50/50 pucks, desperation to win lines, advance plays, block shots, all those things add up," Tavares said. "And certainly the physical nature of the playoffs is a big part of it. That was something that we've always wanted to bring as part of our identity, as Chief has emphasized throughout the season."
As the Senators look to calm themselves after an emotional playoff debut for many, the Leafs will continue to look towards their experience and attempt to capitalize on their opportunities while tightening up their 5-on-5 play.
