The Toronto Maple Leafs have just completed their pre-season slate and after seeing a summary of the numbers, there were 3 very pleasant surprises.

While the Leafs lost their pre-season finale by a score of 6-5, they did not dress a whole lot of NHL talent for the occasion, so we certainly won't be putting much stock into the final score.
The Leafs went into Saturday's game already being fairly confident about what their opening night roster might look like, but after some final numbers were revealed after training camp, there were a few surprises that really stood out.

Three Maple Leafs Players Pleasant Surprises in the Pre-Season

On Sunday, the Toronto Sun's Lance Hornby shared the Leafs' training camp stat leaders, and surprisingly, Matias Maccelli, Nick Robertson and Dennis Hildeby have given the coaching staff something to think about.
Per Hornby, Maccelli not only led the team in assists, but also tied with Scott Laughton for points. Meanwhile, Robertson co-led the team in goals and was the outright leader in shots.

Dennis Hildeby Giving the Leafs Something to Think About

Perhaps the biggest surprise was rookie goaltender Dennis Hildeby, who led the all Leafs goaltenders with a .920 save percentage, which could move the needle a little bit for the coaching staff.
Craig Berube has already tipped his hat to Nick Robertson, who he believes has had a very strong training camp. Still, he does appear to be on the outside looking in.
Likewise, it appears as though Berube is a fan of Maccelli's game, as he was re-elevated to the top line when the Leafs needed to shift Max Domi back to the middle of the ice following Scott Laughton's injury.
The most interesting scenario here involves Hildeby, who one could argue just pushed James Reimer out of the backup spot behind Anthony Stolarz.
Reimer was originally brought in on a PTO and appeared to be in line for a potential 1-year contract when all was said and done. While that may still be the case, it does create an interesting conundrum for the Leafs on whether or not Hildeby might be ready to take on a larger role with Joseph Woll away.
Experience is important, and Reimer certainly has that, but if Hildeby is ready for more NHL experience in his own right, it might be time to lengthen the leash a little bit and allow him to play while the opportunity is there before heading back to the AHL.

Do you think the Maple Leafs should give Dennis Hildeby the backup role while Joseph Woll was away after a tremendous training camp?
