Ex-NHLer Sean Avery Tries to Slap Some Sense Into the Maple Leafs

Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving wants to change the DNA of the forward group and bring in players that thrive in pressure situations, such as Game 7s.

As July 1st approaches, the likelihood that the Leafs will enter next season without their star right winger Mitch Marner increases daily.

There are options to replace some of Marner's scoring, but the more important thing that needs to be addressed is the killer instinct of the team during the post-season.

Former NHLer Sean Avery was on Wednesday's edition of 'The JD Bunkis podcast' where they broke down free agency. Avery, the always controversial career antagonist, called out the Leafs' past over-spending in free agency for the 'wrong players'.

Despite calling out the Leafs' poor cap management - when they've had space available - Avery believes Bennett will be worth every penny the Leafs are able to throw at him.

Leafs Nation may not be pleased with Bennett currently, thanks to the injury Anthony Stolarz got from the forearm Bennett delivered in Game 1, but adding the Stanley Cup Champion and former Calgary Flame would be a huge step in the direction of changing the DNA of the forward group.

Not one to produce a ridiculous amount in the regular season, Bennett thrives in the playoffs, tallying 48 points in 67 post-season games over the past three season, including a league-leading 13 goals so far in this post-season.
