The Toronto Maple Leafs saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end last night at the hands of the Vegas Golden Knights. After thumping the Knights 7-3 last week, the Knights returned the favour handily beating the Leafs 6-2, but it wasn't without some controversy.
With the Leafs down 4-2 and just over 2 minutes to play in the game, Mitch Marner was called for tripping Golden Knights forward Chandler Stephenson. The call was highly controversial as replays showed that Stephenson simply toe-picked and fell by himself.
After seeing the penalty through replay, Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe was livid and had some choice words for the officials. Keefe's rant was not well received by referees Peter MacDougall and Garrett Rank as Rank's reaction was to eject him from the game.
The league has yet to announce if Keefe will be facing another fine for his actions, but given the recent tension between the Leafs and the NHL, it wouldn't come as a surprise to see him handed one simply because the league holds the Leafs to a different standard than every other team.
