The Toronto Maple Leafs dropped a very close 2-1 decision to the Carolina Hurricanes last night, just one night after hanging 6 on the Edmonton Oilers in a 6-3 win. However, the loss to Carolina was not without its controversy.

During last night's game as the Leafs looked to climb back into the game, a slash by Canes defenseman Jaccob Slavin snapped Leafs captain John Tavares' stick in half right in front of the official.

Originally, the play was blown dead, which appeared to signify that the Leafs would be going to the powerplay, but when the dust had settled, no penalty was called. Tavares was rightly upset with the lack of a call on a clear slash as he had attempted to work the puck down low behind the Canes' net. After raising his arms in frustration and having a few words with the officials, nothing came of the play.

In a game that tight, another powerplay may have made all the difference. Yes, the Leafs went 0-4 on the powerplay, and yes, they've had their struggles there this season, but ultimately, these officials have to stop getting away with ignoring the NHL rulebook to benefit the opposing team when officiating Leafs games. It's gotten to the point now where they're not even trying to hide their bias anymore, which is a problem.
