The Maple Leafs and Nick Robertson agreed on a 1-year deal to avoid arbitration, but now GM Brad Treliving must move out some salary if the Leafs still want to acquire a top-six forward.
Given that Treliving has been trying to move David Kampf and Calle Jarnkrok all summer to free up roster and cap space with no luck, he may try his luck at flipping Robertson instead.
Nick Robertson's Cap Hit Will Force the Leafs to Make a Move
After signing Robertson, the Leafs have $1.9M in cap space with 14 forwards, 7 defencemen and 2 goalies currently on their roster, according to Puckpedia.
Puckpedia's projected roster and cap space also includes Michael Pezzetta and Philippe Myers, along with their minimal salaries, being sent to the Toronto Marlies.
The Leafs may have internal options to fill the void in their top-six following the departure of Mitch Marner, but none are proven options yet. Although Treliving's plan was to replace Marner by committee, which he may have done, most still see the right wing of the first line as a need to be filled for the Leafs.
With training camp less than two months away, Treliving will continue to work the phones to see if he can acquire his missing forward ahead of the start of the regular season.
