Player Safety Drops the Ball Following Dangerous Hit on Leafs Winger Nick Robertson
Columbus Blue Jackets defensemen Jack Johnson got away with a very dangerous hit without a penalty or supplemental discipline on Leafs forward Nicholas Robertson.
With the Leafs on a power play in the third period of Saturday night's game, Nick Robertson was skating the puck into the Blue Jackets' zone where he was met by Jack Johnson as he attempted to turn back towards the blue line. In the process of turning back, Johnson completed his hit on the former second-round pick and sent Robertson falling awkwardly and dangerously into the boards, face-first.
Robertson was quick to get back to his feet and immediately looked towards officials to see if Johnson was going to get a penalty for the hit. To his dismay and frustration, no arm went up and Robertson went back to the bench where he told his teammates and the training staff that he was okay.
Whether it was because the game was out of reach for the Blue Jackets or the officials determined that Robertson put himself in that position, it was a surprise to many that no penalty was called, given
the number of questionable calls the Leafs have gotten in recent games.
Not only did Johnson escape a penalty on the play, but it appears that he will not be facing any supplemental discipline from the NHL's Department of Player Safety either.
Once again Player Safety and the officials have shown the inconsistencies that have become a topic of conversation at the recent GM meetings as players, GMs and coaches look for some understanding of what is going to be called or not called heading into the playoffs.
