Last night was a special night for Auston Matthews and his family, as the Scottsdale, AZ native was in Arizona to take on the Coyotes last night at Mullett Arena. What was so special about the occasion, beyond playing his favourite childhood team? Well, he scored goals #50 and #51 against them.
Matthews, like fellow Leaf Matthew Knies, had a lot of family and friends in attendance for this one, including his parents, Brian and Ema Matthews, who were elated to see their son notch his 50th goal of the season in just his 54th game. Their reaction was awesome.
Matthews is not only beginning to run away in the Rocket Richard Trophy race, but he's also making a strong case to be this year's Hart Trophy winner as well, awarded to the player who is deemed most valuable to his team.
Last night, even with the game taking place in Arizona, when Matthews scored his 50th goal of the season, the fans in attendance chanted "MVP!" in celebration of the Arizona product as he looks to help propel his team to their 8th straight playoff berth. Matthews now has 75 points in just 54 games this season.
