With the clock potentially ticking on an Anthony Stolarz extension, NHL insider Darren Dreger has provided some much needed clarity on where the Toronto Maple Leafs currently stand.

Heading into training camp, a main talking point was whether or not the Toronto Maple Leafs would have a contract extension done and dusted with goaltender Anthony Stolarz.
It was reported from the horse's mouth just a few days into training camp that Stolarz would like to have a contract extension done before the regular season begins.
However, the million dollar question is, what do you pay a goaltender who doesn't have all that much experience as a starter and has a history with injuries, including a couple sustained just last year?
Conversations have ranged all over the map, but what hasn't helped the situation is that the Leafs don't necessarily have a direct comparable to work off of.
NHL insider Darren Dreger provided some clarity on the situation as he believes the Leafs would rather go the short-term route at 3 years, but would settle for a 4th year if the term was pencilled in at $4.5 million.
Dreger did add that he believes something will get done, which is certainly good news, but with the salary cap rising exponentially and a lot of his counterparts being paid handsomely, it will be interesting to see where Stolarz's camp is at.
It's hard to quantify a solid number for Stolarz, considering that he had just 108 games of experience in 7 seasons prior to 2024-25. However the talent is unquestionable, as he led the league in save percentage for the second straight year.
It does sound like both sides want to get a deal done, and based on the reported figures, it would be a great deal for all involved. Stolarz gets the security he's been looking for and the Leafs have a cost effective tandem for the foreseeable future.
