This season, the NHL is filled with young rookies having stellar seasons. One of those rookies happens to be Toronto Maple Leaf forward Michael Bunting. Through 79 games this year, Bunting has recorded 63 points (23 goals & 40 assists), which puts him first in all rookie scoring.

NHL.com had 17 writers vote on who they felt deserved the Calder Trophy for rookie of the year, a vote in which Michael Bunting landed second behind Red Wings defensemen Moritz Seider.
While it would be great to see a Leaf win the Calder for the first time since Auston Matthews won it in 2017, Moritz Seider does seem to be the logical pick. With 49 points in 80 games this season, Seider leads all rookie defensemen in scoring.
In fact, Seider's 49 points are the third most in the salary cap era by any rookie defensemen, behind only Calle Makar (50 points) and Quinn Hughes (53 points) in the 2019-2020 season.
Regardless of if Bunting wins the rookie of the year, it has been a remarkable season for the Scarborough native.
