On December 8th of last season, Nicholas Robertson was hit awkwardly into the boards by defenseman Matt Roy in a game against the LA Kings. At the time, the Leafs and Robertson elected to rehab the shoulder injury he suffered from the hit and he was initially expected to miss 6 weeks. Following 6 weeks of rehab however, his recovery was not making the progress he and the Leafs had hoped for and surgery was required.
Following surgery and months of rehab, Robertson returned to the ice a few weeks ago and is now back in the gym in preparation for training camp which begins in just under two months. Yesterday, his trainers in Michigan shared a video of Robertson in the gym doing some training. It is not the typical training video that everyone is used to seeing though. Instead, it is a video of Robertson working on his hands the way new Leaf Ryan Reaves likely does. Robertson was seen boxing with one of his trainers showing no signs that his injury is hampering him.
Robertson has had a tremendous amount of bad luck when it comes to injuries since being drafted in the 2nd round back in 2019 by the Leafs. Since turning pro in the 2019-20 season, he has yet to play more than 38 games in a season (combined between the AHL and NHL). He has missed a significant amount of time with a knee injury, broken leg, illness and of course his shoulder injury. With just a few forward spots not yet solidified on the Leafs' roster for the upcoming season, Robertson will have to have a great training camp if he wants to become an NHL regular this season. Not only that, but he will have to do everything he can to stay as healthy as possible.
