Study shows just how ridiculous the cost of a home game in Toronto is
I'm sure everyone is well aware of the fact that tickets to a Maple Leafs game in Toronto are very costly to aquire. Always near the top of Forbes list of most valuable NHL teams, being an Original 6 club, and being in a hockey hot bed has kept the price high, but surprisingly it has only increased by 11% since 2012.
US Betting Report conducted a study using "Fan Cost Index" which measures the total cost of taking a family of four to a game, configuring ticket prices, two small beers, four small soft drinks, four hot dogs, parking for one hour, two game programs, and two cheap adult-size hats.
The Maple Leafs clocked in with a 2012 FCI of $631.15 and a 2022 FCI of $697.75 for a percentage change of 11%. Following the Leafs are two expansion clubs in Seattle ($672.89) and Vegas ($649.72) with the New York Rangers ($645.42) and the Chicago Blackhawks ($573.76) rounding out the top 5.
The 11% change in 10 years barely puts a dent into how things have changed across the league. The Tampa Bay Lightning lead the charge in terms of percentage change at a whopping 70% as they went from $256.48 in 2012 to $434.74 in 2022. Nashville (57% change), the Rangers (55% change), Boston (51% change) and Detroit (49% change) round out the top 5.
A game in Toronto has always been expensive, but it's interesting to see that things haven't changed all that much in a decade. $66.60 numerical change is low compared to the rest of the league, but that just goes to show you how expensive things were back in 2012. The Rangers went from $417.16 to $645.42 and even the Bruins went $378.06 to $569.96 - representing some of the largest numerical changes at around $190
Going by these new numbers, the family experience is now a very costly affair across the entire league, not just in Toronto anymore.
