The Toronto Maple Leafs continued on their 5-game road trip on Saturday, playing their way to a 5-3 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in a game they probably should have won. The Buds outplayed the Canes for most of the game, outshooting the home team 44-28, but one player for the Leafs stood out above all the rest and could have easily had 5 or 6 goals.

Auston Matthews fired a season high and career high 15 shots on goal against the Hurricanes on Saturday night, notching a pair of goals (numbers 35 and 36 on the year) in 22:19 of ice time. Matthews was noticeable all night and was very arguably the best player on the ice for both teams. His head coach, Sheldon Keefe, had nothing but good things to say about Matthews, even though his team didn't skate away with the 2 points.

"He's right back to being one of the most dominant players in the league." - Keefe on Matthews, following his 2-goal performance on Saturday

Matthews has battled a couple of different injuries this season, but now that he's healthy, we're really beginning to see him show glimpses of the brilliance he displayed last season, when he won the Ted Lindsay, Hart and Rocket Richard Trophies. One of the best things aboht Matthews finding his groove right now is that he's putting it all together right before the playoffs are set to begin. I, for one, am HERE for it!
