It was expected that heading into this season, Joseph Will would be, at the very least, the backup to Ilya Samsonov. When the Leafs placed Matt Murray on LTIR in late July, it confirmed that the backup spot was Woll's job to lose.
Woll has had a very good showing in his limited action with the Leafs going 6-1-0 with 2.16GAA and a .932 save percentage in 7 games this past season. Through 11 career games, the 25-year-old is 9-2-0 with one shutout and a .924 save percentage. At this point, Woll has played well enough to earn the backup role and Leafs GM Brad Treliving believes that the job belongs to Woll as well.
Woll is on a bargain of a contract for the next two seasons, making under $800K each season. This must also have been very enticing for the Leafs - even more so now that they know he can actually play - and play well.
