There were plenty of raised eyebrows on draft one of the draft when the Toronto Maple Leafs selected 5'10 Easton Cowan of the London Knights with the 28th overall pick at the end of the first round. Most of the issue that people had with the pick is that they didn't really know much about the Strathroy, ON native. Well, he'll have a few more fans after this one.
During the Leafs/Wings Traverse City prospect tourney finale this afternoon, Cowan decided to approach 6-foot-4 William Wallinder after the whistle to air his displeasure over something Wallinder had done on the play. Cowan, a much smaller player, was absolutely fearless in his approach of the hulking Red Wing, leading to a linesman getting between them.
We've learned a lot about Cowan during this prospect tournament. He is a feisty, energetic puck hound, who skates hard, checks hard and is clearly not intimidated by anyone out on the ice. This is beginning to look like a very smart pick by Wes Clark and the Maple Leafs' scouting staff.
