The NHL and the NHLPA are very close on reaching an important agreement regarding the new CBA, which should have a massive impact on the league in the coming years.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and the NHLPA have been in contact with one another regarding negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement.
"I don't have an announcement to make today that we have a deal, but we have more than a year to go and I think we're in really good shape, having really good discussions. That's a testament to Marty Walsh and Ron Hainsey and people at the Players' Association who have been working tirelessly with us."
Walsh felt the same way and despite the highs-and-lows that go into negotiations regarding the CBA, he agrees that there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel between both sides.
"It's moving steady, it's moving forward and I feel good with where we are and we'll see what happens. It gets complicated at certain times, any collective bargaining agreement, but it's not where it was in the past here where you're seeing national disputes between organized labor and companies."
The NHL and NHLPA Appear to be Well on Pace to Striking a Deal and Avoiding Another NHL Lockout
The recent statements from the NHL and NHLPA were backed up by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, who elaborated on the situation, claiming that a new deal should get done "very soon, barring something unexpected".
The current CBA isn't set to expire until September of 2026 but with talks progressing very smoothly, that should bode well for the future of the NHL. The last thing they need right now is a lockout with how well things have gone in recent years, as evidenced by the massive spike in the salary cap over the next 3 seasons.
The NHL has had 4 lockouts since the start of the 1990s. The strike in 1992 postponed 30 games during the 2021-22 season, the lockout in 1994-95 shortened the year to 48 games per team, the infamous 2004-05 lockout that wiped out the entire season, and the most recent one in 2012-13 that shortened the campaign to 48 games.
Talks are seemingly progressing and both sides are very close to getting a new deal done, which should wipe away any fears of an impending lockout coming our way.
