Former Maple Leafs goaltender Frederik Andersen has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career and only played in 34 games for the Carolina Hurricanes last season. This season, Andersen had played in 6 games so far, going 4-1-0 but will be unavailable to the Hurricanes for an unspecified amount of time going forward.

This afternoon, the Hurricanes announced that the 34-year-old will be out indefinitely due to a blood clot that was discovered during recent medical testing. Hurricanes President and General Manager Don Waddell released a statement on behalf of the Hurricanes.

"During recent medical testing, it was discovered that Frederik Andersen
had a blood clotting issue that needed to be addressed. There is currently no timetable for his return, but we are confident that Freddie will be able to make a full recovery."

It's a good thing that the Canes doctors were able to identify the issue early, because as many may already know, blood clots can be fatal in some circumstances, so never mind his career being at risk - his life may have been at risk.

Andersen was a fan favourite during the early stages of his time in Toronto, despite his struggles in the playoffs. Through 485 career games he has posted a 286-156-52 record to go along with a .915 save percentage and 2.58 GAA.
