"It went down to the deadline, but the Toronto Maple Leafs and restricted free agent Mitch Marner got their deal done this fall. There was a lot of chatter that Marner was willing to sign an offer sheet and one report came out that Columbus had presented him one. During a recent appearance on Spittin Chiclets, NHL insider Elliotte Freidman revealed the details behind it. Friedman confirmed that the Blue Jackets and Marner were trying to get something done however the two sides couldn't agree on one thing, term. According to Friedman, Marner was willing to sign a 3 or 4 year deal with Columbus, but the Blue Jackets wanted 7. "Columbus wanted to offer sheet Mitch Marner but he wouldn't sign for 7 years, he wanted to do 3 or 4, and Columbus said 'No, were not doing that."
Very, very interesting revelation by Friedman.
