The Toronto Maple Leafs are confirmed to have been in talks with Kyle Dubas and the Penguins at the trade deadline, and Dubas appears to have hosed his former team.
With the trade deadline now passed, it's clear that the Toronto Maple Leafs were one of the day's big winners.
However, as Nick Alberga pointed out this week, one player the Maple Leafs were pursuing didn't pan out, unfortunately. That player was former fan favorite
Luke Schenn.
According to Alberga on X, the Leafs didn't acquire Schenn because they were too busy focusing on their other moves. Rather than waiting to strike a deal with the Leafs, Dubas pulled the trigger to send Schenn to Winnipeg instead.
"Told Leafs were in on Luke Schenn after he was dealt to Pittsburgh.
Obviously, Toronto had a few things cooking. Pens didn't want to wait around, which led to Winnipeg trade."
While the Leafs missed out on Schenn, who was traded to the Winnipeg Jets for 2nd round and 4th round picks, they still came out as winners on trade deadline day.
While the Maple Leafs went "Schenn-less" at the trade deadline, it ultimately worked out for the best as the players they brought in were better fits for the team at a more reasonable acquisition cost in the long run.
