The latest reports surrounding Brad Marchand's next contract will likely force the Maple Leafs to spend their cap space elsewhere to change their forward group.
The Maple Leafs Can Get Creative to Bring Brad Marchand to Toronto
According to Chris Johnston, on Thursday's 'The Chris Johnston Show', the 37-year-old's next deal may be longer and more expensive than the Leafs can afford contract-wise.
"The more I talk to people around the league, the more I feel he might even get a 4-year contract in free agency. He wants to play past 40... I do believe the Maple Leafs are a team that makes sense. He's going to sign a major deal. I think it's North of $8M and could be even a 4-year deal."
The endorsement deals the Leafs can offer may make Marchand pause and think, but with the player looking to maximize the dollar amount to end his career, the endorsement money may not be enough to offset a lower AAV that is in the Leafs' comfort range.
