Maple Leafs Learn Fates of David Kampf and William Villeneuve as Waivers Resolve

The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially learned the fates of veteran David Kampf and rookie William Villeneuve as waivers resolve on Saturday.
Following an interesting day on Friday, which saw the Leafs place David Kampf on waivers after announcing that center Scott Laughton would miss the first few weeks of the season, we now know the fates of Kampf, along with rookie William Villeneuve, who was also waived by the team.
David Kampf and William Villeneuve Officially Clear Waivers for the Maple Leafs
According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, all players who were placed on waivers on Friday cleared on Saturday afternoon and can be assigned to the AHL's Toronto Marlies.
For David Kampf, the last 24 hours were likely a whirlwind, as an injury to Laughton made it seem as though he had a potential chance to stick with the Leafs to begin the regular season.
Unfortunately, Kampf was waived a couple of hours after practice, putting his future with the organization in doubt. An adept penalty killer and strong defensive forward, Kampf possessed some value, and could have been lost for nothing.
Fortunately, the Leafs were able to retain the veteran forward, likely due in part to the extra year remaining on his contract, carrying a $2.4M cap hit.
Leafs' Risk With William Villenueve Pays Off
In the case of 23-year-old William Villeneuve, his future with the Leafs seemed even more bleak, as his breakout season with the Marlies could have enticed another team to put in a claim.
The offensive defenseman produced a career best 40 points in 55 games in his 3rd year of professional hockey has 1 season remaining on his ELC and will be a restricted free agent upon expiry.
While Kampf's immediate future remains somewhat uncertain, the belief is that Villeneuve will be assigned to the Toronto Marlies ahead of Monday's deadline to finalize NHL rosters.
