The Toronto Maple Leafs sent Easton Cowan down to the Toronto Marlies on Monday, but some cryptic comments from Brad Treliving have fans second guessing themselves.
Considering how lauded the youngster was all throughout camp, and even going back to some comments made by Craig Berube, it was certainly a decision that left many confused when he was sent down.
Prominent analysts believed the decision was cap related, as Chris Johnston intimated that the move set them up to put
Marshall Rifai on LTIR the following day, which would create some financial flexibility.
With roster deadline day complete, and the Toronto Maple Leafs taking aim towards their season opener tomorrow night against Montreal, this morning's practice brought about further confusion with Cowan's presence.
After some deleted tweets, Cowan was in fact on the ice today, but he was away from the main group, and was seen doing a skills session alongside fellow prospect Jacob Quillan, which is generally done for healthy scratches.
To address the confusion, general manager Brad Treliving settled the score by stating that Cowan was not on the roster and that they'll continue to monitor the situation for the foreseeable future.
Today, he's not on the roster. We'll see what happens tomorrow. Easton has had a really good camp. I think he's right there, ready to play for us. If he's going to be playing with us here, great, but if he's not, I want him playing.
As things stand today, Cowan is not on the Maple Leafs' roster, nor will he be making his NHL debut tomorrow night against the Canadiens.
Treliving mentioning that they want him playing no matter what, intimates that he could very well start the year with the Toronto Marlies, as they don't want him sitting around for no reason.
However, the way that he worded those remarks seemed calculated, like perhaps Cowan could yet sneak back into the lineup for tomorrow's home opener.
It's a situation we will continue to monitor as even most of the Leafs beat reporters were left confused with his initial presence at today's practice session.
