Tonight, the Toronto Maple Leafs are in Las Vegas to face-off against the Golden Knights in a Thursday tilt on the second half of a back-to-back. It will need to be all hands on deck tonight, because not only is Toronto going up against one of the top teams in the West, they will have to contend with a familiar face officiating in Wes McCauley.
The last time the Maple Leafs found themselves on the ice being officiated by Wes McCauley, was back on November 2nd against the Boston Bruins when forward Brad Marchand got away scot-free after taking defenseman Timothy Liljegren out of the game, which led to the Swedish blueliner missing 17 games with a high-ankle sprain.
There have been plenty of theories over the years that the NHL referee has a conflict of interest with Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe. Regardless if you read into it or not and choose whether or not to believe it, what can be proven is Wes McCauley tends to put the whistle away against Toronto while letting the opposing teams get away with more.
Whether or not it's been a coincidence over the years or if McCauley really does have it out for the Maple Leafs, they'll need all hands on deck tonight against a Vegas Golden Knights team that are 19-8-2 on home ice.
