Leafs' Anthony Stolarz opens up on his relationship with goaltending partner Joseph Woll and gives us some insight on how things work between them off the ice.
Perhaps their biggest strength in 2024-25, the Toronto Maple Leafs possessed a real solid goaltending tandem for the first time in quite awhile. On any given night, you could trust either Anthony Stolarz or Joseph Woll, and even when injuries arose, they were up to the challenge.
While tandems can bring about competition, and perhaps even division at times, the two goaltenders have a fantastic relationship on and off the ice, at least according to Stolarz during his interview with EJ Hradek.
"It's actually unbelievable, he's a great guy. We have the same agent so we got introduced almost immediately after we signed last year. I got to camp and we hit it off right away, me, him, Matt Murray, and even Hildeby, last year, we have a great relationship amongst all of us."
The New Jersey native posted a 21-8-3 record with a 2.14 GAA and a league-best .926 SV% during the season, whereas Woll went 27-14-1 with a .909 SV%. Perhaps even more important was how they stood out when one of them was missing due to injury, which truly solidified the tandem.
With the season nearing it's completion, there were a lot of discussions being had on who should start the first game of the playoffs, an honour that was bestowed upon the veteran Stolarz.
Stuff like that could bring serious division between two goaltenders that are legitimate NHL starters, but it never fazed them since they had one goal in mind, which was winning.
"We all want the same thing and we're pushing each other, but we don't really let that affect us off the ice. You can go out to dinner with them, hang out, walk around the mall on your day off. It's been a real treat."
Going into the new season, goaltending is probably the least of their concerns, and a lot of that has to do with the relationship that Stolarz and Woll have formed, both on and off the ice. Look for the tandem to improve on their efforts from last season and propel the Maple Leafs further into the playoffs.
