On his most recent edition of 32 Thoughts, Elliotte Friedman made a major announcement regarding the Maple Leafs and President and Alternate Governor, Brendan Shanahan.

There has been a lot of speculation over what might happen with Shanahan following yet another disappointing first round loss to the Boston Bruins over the last week, and with today's press conference coming up, we shouldn't have to wait too long for our answer as to what will be happening with Shanahan ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Per Elliotte Friedman, the prevailing thought here is that Shanahan is going to be coming back for next season.

"I believe that Brendan Shanahan will be back next season for the Maple Leafs. I don't know exactly what they're going to announce [on Friday].

I don't know if they're going to announce 'he's staying on and that's all we're going to say'. I don't know if they're going to announce 'he's going to finish the last year of his deal and then we'll figure it out'.

But one of the things I heard is that Keith Pelley wanted to be at this media conference and that it was going to happen at a time where he was going to be able to attend, and so that's Friday.

I don't know if he's going to give a vote of confidence to Shanahan or Treliving, or if it's going to be a sign that he's about to become more involved... He wanted to be there, he's going to be there, and I think Shanahan is going to be back for another year."

Shanahan has been with the Maple Leafs since April 11th, 2014, which means he's been in his position for 10 years. He oversaw the Leafs' top to bottom rebuild, which has landed the likes of Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Mitch Marner in Toronto via the draft.

He, along with former GM Kyle Dubas, were integral in bringing John Tavares home to Toronto in the summer of 2018. In having said that, though, it's also fair to wonder whether keeping him around for another year is the right move, after his team has lost in the 1st round in 7 of the last 8 seasons and only one 1 game in Round 2 last season.

With Keith Pelley, Brad Treliving and Shanahan taking part in a press conference today, we should have a lot more information about what to expect this summer, but as Friedman suggested, Shanahan is expected to be staying put in Toronto. At least for now.
