Former Maple Leafs forward Brian Boyle has revealed which Atlantic Division team is off to the most concerning start this season, and the answer may surprise you.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are off to a very mediocre start this season, owners of a 3-3-1 record through their first 7 games of the 2025-26 season.
Losers of their last two games, the Leafs had a really good opportunity to establish themselves as one of the top teams in the Atlantic Division this season this week, but losses to Seattle and New Jersey have really impacted the vibe around the team and raised a lot of questions.

What's Causing the Most Problems in Toronto?

A rough start to the season for Auston Matthews has been a part of the problem, with the 3-time Rocket Richard Trophy winner not even in the top-3 for points on the team at the moment.
Matthews revealed in an interview on Thursday with The Athletic's Jonas Siegel, though, that he believes the offense will come back this year after a down 2024-25 season, in which he was marred by injury, notching just 33 goals.
Leafs coach Craig Berube has also had to throw the lines in a blender this week after injuries to Chris Tanev and Morgan Rielly, and a subpar showing against the Devils forced his hand.

Brian Boyle Not Nearly as Worried About the Leafs as he Is About Another Atlantic Division Team

Former Leafs forward Brian Boyle was a guest on Leafs Morning Take this week, and when asked which Atlantic Division club concerns him the most, it wasn't the Leafs that he identified, but the Tampa Bay Lightning.
"Tampa. They've got one win, right? And they don't have the injury problems. I'm worried about that team. It's kind of bizarre what's happening."
Boyle mentioned how good the Montreal Canadiens have looked, calling them the most fun to watch club in the Atlantic Division this season. He also gave the Detroit Red Wings their flowers after a very positive start.

The Leafs Would Be Wise to Sort Out Their Problems Sooner Than Later

The point Boyle really wanted to drive home, though, was just how tough it's going to be to make the playoffs in the East this season. As such, the Leafs need to sort out their issues, and quick, to avoid finding themselves in a Wild Card race later in the season, potentially against a team like the Lightning, who tend to get better as the season goes on.
While the Leafs certainly aren't off to the most concerning start in the league, a 3-3-1 record certainly doesn't inspire a lot of confidence either. Hopefully, the club can stack back-to-back wins against 3-4-0 Buffalo tonight and tomorrow and begin their rise to the top of the Atlantic Division once again.
