As we get further into the summer, the future of Mitch Marner with the Toronto Maple Leafs becomes more and more certain, to the dismay of fans clamoring for change.

Since the Leafs were eliminated by the Boston Bruins in Game 7, fans have been wanting to see a major change in the core structure of the team. Unfortunately, that has yet to happen and with each passing day, appears less and less likely that it will.

Most of the chatter this summer has surrounded the potential trade of Mitch Marner, but with teams now having set most of their rosters and spent most of their cap space, Marner's future with the Leafs at least for the upcoming season appears to be set - at least according to former Leaf and TSN analyst Carlo Colaiacovo.

"The difficulty of making a trade post July 1st is now you've got a lot of teams right now that have spent their money, spent time putting together their rosters. They've allowed development camps to play out, now they're looking at the rest of the crop of free agents," said Colaiacovo on TSN's 'First Up' on Wednesday.

"We're going to see PTO season coming up here soon... Anybody that believes a big trade that the Maple Leafs could potentially make becomes even harder now for two reasons. The number one reason why this trade was always going to be hard cause a guy like Mitch Marner has a no-trade clause... The number two obstacle is any team that the player would potentially want to go to, they have to have the cap space and they have to have the assets the Leafs are looking for.

It doesn't come as a surprise that there won't be any major shake up with the Leafs' forward group given the difficulties that always presented themselves. In addition, new head coach Craig Berube said he was looking forward to coaching Marner at the end of the NHL entry draft and doubled down on those comments last week all but secured Marner's immediate future with the blue and white.

I think it's time to come to terms with the fact that the Leafs are running it back again, folks. There's certainly the possibility that things could change, but for now, we should probably write Marner's name in pen on the opening night roster.
