The voice behind the Miracle On Ice says Leafs will win the Stanley Cup
The name Al Michaels may not be familiar to you. Al is a sports commentator with Amazon Prime, currently doing play-by play for NFL Thursday Night Football. I can almost guarantee, however, that as a reader of this website, you've heard his voice. Michaels was the play-by-play commentator for one of the greatest moments in sports history. The 1980 Miracle On Ice.
For those who don't know, at the 1980 Olympics, the Soviet Union was a heavy favourite to take home the gold medal for the 6th straight time. Herb Brooks, coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers led a team of college players to an incredible victory over their Soviet rivals. In the dying seconds, it was Al Michaels' voice that had an entire nation hanging on the edge of their seats.
It was Al Michael's "5 seconds left! Do you believe in miracles? YES" that coined the term "Miracle on Ice." The call was so perfect that when Disney made a movie about the game, they used Michaels' original commentary for the last 5 seconds.
At this point, Leaf fans may feel like it would take a miracle to win the Stanley Cup. The drought was already 13 years old when the Miracle on Ice happened in Lake Placid. According to Michaels, that miracle is on its way. In an interview with the SmartLess podcast, hosted by Sean Hayes, Jason Bateman and known Leafs fan Will Arnett, Michaels claimed that the Leafs will win the Stanley Cup within our lifetime.
"Sooner or later your ship's gonna come in. The Toronto Maple Leafs will, in our lifetime, win a Stanley Cup. You're in a desert right now but I'm feeling the oasis, Will (Arnett). Maybe this year!" - Al Michaels
Arnett went on to suggest that perhaps having Al provide play-by-play for Leafs games would bring the "magic touch" that the Leafs need to win. I mean, if we can't have Joe Bowen, Al Michaels would be a heck of a consolation prize, right? It's worth noting that Michaels is 78 years old, so when he says "in our lifetime" he's talking about the next few years. Some may think it's impossible, but I choose to believe the guy who has experienced a Miracle on Ice.
