Earlier today, Leafs captain John Tavares was held out from practice due to an apparent injury. At the time of the original report, it was being labelled an "upper-body injury". As per head coach Sheldon Keefe in an injury update this afternoon, Tavares is expected to miss a minimum of three weeks due to an oblique strain.

It appears as though the Leafs are going to be testing the waters with both Alexander Kerfoot and Calle Jarnkrok at 2C during training camp to see who the best fit to play that role on opening night might be. Kerfoot was the team's 2C when injuries to Matthews or Tavares warranted it in the past. Jarnkrok has extensive experience as a 2C from his time in Nashville.

Tavares is heading into his fifth season with the Leafs. Last season, he posted 76 points (27 goals & 49 assists) in 79 games for the Maple Leafs. The first overall pick from the 2009 NHL entry draft has three season left, including this one, on his 7 year / $77 million contract.

The Leafs did offer some good news today on the injury side of things. Veteran defensemen Jake Muzzin will be back with the team for practice tomorrow. Muzzin had been sidelined since the start of training camp with back tightness. He's not expected to be a full participant, but it's a step in the right direction nonetheless.
