Rangers shopping a pair of RFA's, including 26-year-old goaltender

According to Arthur Staple of The Athletic, the Rangers are looking to move on from a pair of RFAs in forward Julien Gauthier and goaltender Alexandar Georgiev. Both restricted free agents have arbitration rights and the potential awards from an arbitrator could put the Rangers in a very difficult cap situation.

With $12M in cap space and with only 15 players signed for next season the Rangers need to fill out 7 spots. Doing so with just $12M in cap space is a challenge for any GM. With UFAs Andrew Copp, Frank Vatrano and Ryan Strome also needing significant raises the Rangers need to move some money out if they want any chance at re-signing them.

The Montreal Canadiens had been linked previously to Georgiev and the fact that they are once again linked to him could signal that they are not expecting Carey Price to return next season. Bringing in Georgiev to play alongside Jake Allen would allow the Habs to continue to develop Cayden Primeau instead of continuing to thrust him into NHL action.

The Leafs are another potential team to watch here. Their need for a goaltender is obvious with Petr Mrazek likely on the way out and Jack Campbell's future in Toronto up in the air. They were rumoured to have had interest in Georgiev in the past, so there's no reason to believe that now that he is actually available, they haven't at least checked in.
