Toronto Maple Leafs seventh-round draft pick Matthew Hlacar has opened up about the relief of being drafted and the Toronto player he idolized growing up.
As the Toronto Maple Leafs' prospects continue preparing for the upcoming season, it's clear this group brings both grit and determination.
Hlacar, previously undrafted in the OHL, spoke openly about the emotional moment when he was finally selected in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.
According to Mark Masters on X:
"I've never been drafted before so it was a relief for sure. I can't even describe it with words to be honest. The best feeling ever."
Masters also noted that Hlacar grew up cheering for the Maple Leafs and idolized Phil Kessel:
"Cheered for Leafs growing up; favourite player was Phil Kessel."
Hlacar's childhood idol, Phil Kessel, has been a hot topic recently as debates continue over his Hall of Fame credentials.
Making the NHL as a seventh-round pick is no easy path, but Hlacar has already taken the hardest step, getting drafted. He should be proud of that accomplishment.
