NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman suggested on Wednesday that Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane is being traded, only for Kane to confirm the news moments later.
The dust has barely settled for the Edmonton Oilers following a 2nd consecutive loss to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Finals, and they have already completed a major transaction.
According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman on Wednesday morning, there were rumblings coming out of Edmonton that Evander Kane could be heading to the Vancouver Canucks.
Evander Kane Actually Confirmed Reports of His Own Trade Before it Was Officially Approved by the League Office
It didn't take long for Kane to confirm the rumour, as the veteran winger took to social media to share the news publicly that he would indeed be making his way back to his hometown.
The kicker was that Kane said his goodbyes to Edmonton and confirmed his move to Vancouver before the trade call, which means that the deal wasn't even approved by the NHL's office when he leaked it.
The news comes as somewhat of a surprise as there were no real substantiated reports that anything was even close until this morning.
Kane has had a bit of a spotty past during his NHL career stemming all the way back to the beginning with the Atlanta Thrashers. His most tumultuous time, however, came during his stint with the San Jose Sharks between 2017-2021.
According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, the Canucks will take on all of Kane's $5.125M cap hit. They'll be sending only a 4th round pick to Edmonton in the deal.
The Vancouver native has produced 326 goals and 617 points across 930 career NHL games thus far. He has also produced 1186 career PIMs to go along with 2213 career hits.
