On Tuesday, the Edmonton Oilers shocked the hockey world when they placed former Maple Leafs goalie Jack Campbell on waivers. To no one's surprise, he and his $5M cap hit cleared waivers and he was assigned to the Oilers' AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. Last night, Campbell made his debut for the Condors, and low and behold, his struggles continued.

Campbell gave up three goals on 11 shots to begin the game and gave up four goals on 20 shots by the end of the game, including this one:

Campbell was signed last off-season by the Oilers to a 5-year, $25M deal that sees him earn $5M per season. The Oilers were hopeful that he would provide some stability to the net after years of volatility and inconsistency.

Unfortunately, Campbell struggled last season and lost the net to Stuart Skinner. While he went 21-9-4 in 36 starts, he posted a horrendous .888 save percentage and 3.41 GAA. This season was supposed to be different, and better, but it ended up getting worse for Campbell and the Oilers.

In five games with the Oilers before being waived, Campbell was 1-4-0 with a .873 save percentage and whopping 4.50 GAA. If his struggles continue in the AHL, the Oilers could look at buying him out in the off-season to free up some cap space, but right now, they are hoping that he will be able to rediscover his game, even after a tough start in Bakersfield.
