Former Maple Leafs defender Tyson Barrie continues his comedic farewell from the NHL, revealing the funny truth behind his retirement
As every NHL career eventually comes to an end, players must face the inevitable decision to retire. But few have handled it with as much humour and grace as Tyson Barrie.
Now, Barrie has added to his antics with another comedic explanation as to why he decided to hang up the skates.
According to Dave McCarthy on X, Barrie shared his reasoning in trademark Barrie fashion:
"It was a decision in tandem with the 32 NHL teams."
The implication, of course, is that no team was willing to offer him a contract, leaving retirement as his only option, unless he wanted to play in the American Hockey League.
His 70 games with the Maple Leafs remain memorable, as he was part of the infamous trade that sent fan-favourite
Nazem Kadri to Colorado -- a move many Leafs fans still resent to this day.
While Barrie's time as an NHL player has come to an end, his quick wit and sense of humour could easily translate into new opportunities -- perhaps even a role as a hockey analyst, or podcast host.
