Sean Avery openly admits to felony with first purchase from first NHL pay check

Over his 13 seasons in the NHL, Sean Avery was one of the most interesting, and at times, controversial, players in the league and became one of the game's great agitators. Avery was and still is one of the most outspoken NHLers and wasn't afraid to show his personality on or off the ice. While some of his antics caused controversy, they made for must-see TV.

Recently, an Instagram profile, Hockeyforeveerhq, reached out to Avery as part of their 'First Paycheck' series, where they ask current and former players what they bought with their first paycheck. Avery's response caught many off-guard when he revealed the first thing he purchased was an ounce of mushrooms.

Most of the time, when a player is asked that question, it garners a generic response such as a car or paying off their parents' house or bills or something along those lines, but given how polarizing his career was, it doesn't come as much of a surprise that mushrooms were the first purchase Avery made.

Over 580 career games, Avery tallied 90 goals, 247 points and a whopping 1533 penalty minutes across 13 seasons with the New York Rangers, LA Kings, Dallas Stars and Detroit Red Wings.
