Insider reveals next steps for Andreas Johnsson once his contract is terminated today
In early July, former Maple Leaf Andreas Johnsson signed a 1-year deal worth $800K with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the hopes that reuniting with now Penguins President and GM Kyle Dubas would rejuvenate his career. Unfortunately for Johnsson, that has not been the case.
Johnsson has yet to play in a game for the Penguins this season was placed on waivers by the team yesterday to terminate his contract. According to Elliotte Friedman, Johnsson will be heading back home to Sweden where he is expected to sign a three-year contract with Skellefteå AIK (SHL).
The former seventh round pick of the Leafs in the 2013 draft was named the playoff MVP after posting 24 points in 16 playoff games for the Toronto Marlies on their way to capturing the Calder Cup in 2018.
The following season he had what many thought was a breakout year, posting 20 goals and 43 points in 73 games. Johnsson however, was never able to really regain the form from his rookie season as he played more than 50 games just once more in the 2021-2022 season with New Jersey. In 259 career games, Johnsson registered 48 goals and 116 points.
