David Ayres, the 42-year-old zamboni driver who famously beat the Leafs as an EBUG, outed for alleged abusive behaviour by ex-wife
February 22, 2020 is a day that will live in infamy for those in the Toronto Maple Leafs' fanbase. Why? Because that's the night that a 42-year-old emergency backup goaltender/zamboni driver stepped in for the Carolina Hurricanes and helped beat the Leafs 6-3.
Since that day, David Ayres has been celebrated as a hero for the Hurricanes. He was even in talks with Disney about a potential movie about his unlikely underdog story. But while he has been largely viewed as an all-around good guy, according to his now ex-wife, Sarah Ayres, that simply is not the case.
Sarah Ayres took to Twitter on November 4th to out her now ex-husband for his alleged abusive behaviour. She claims that she has gone through the full range of emotions and is coming out of what she portrays as an abusive marriage a much stronger person.
November 4th is going to go down as the very last day that I will ever have to hear someone say to me "just look at you, you're fat and disgusting!"
It will be the last time I'm told I'm ugly, it will be the last day of mental anguish that I have to face at the hands of someone who swore they loved me. No more gaslighting, narcissism, abuse or control.
The ugly cry has happened and it was harsher than harsh. The realization that I subjected myself to so much negativity is beyond comprehension.
Hindsight and the recent support and love of a group of women has changed the way will forever see my worth. I have come out of this a changed and raw but empowered as fuck individual and I swear to Christ I will never allow myself to ever go back to the person I was.
Fyi... this supposed fat disgusting woman is now down 20lbs and is writing a mother fucking book!
-Sarah Ayres on what she claims to have endured while married to David Ayres
If true, this is quite disturbing. To think that someone who was celebrated the way that Ayres was for nearly 3 years could potentially be living an entirely different life has left a lot of people feeling cheated, tricked and betrayed.
If these allegations are true, hopfully the former Mrs. Ayres is now in a better and much safer place. This is certainly not something anyone saw coming - but then again, it never is.
Ironically enough, the Leafs are in Raleigh, NC tonight to take on the Carolina Hurricanes.
