According to Chris Johnston, the Maple Leafs have re-emerged as a potential landing spot for a former Flames forward that GM Brad Treliving is very familiar with.

Collecting 9 of a possible 10 points in their last five games, the Leafs have quickly turned their season around and find themselves just two points out of a wild card spot.
Before their recent surge up the standings, and improved play, there were thoughts the Leafs may explore a rebuild, but Brad Treliving was not ready to wave the white flag.

Leafs Continue Search For Top-Six Forward

Reluctant to waive the white flag on their season, the Leafs and Treliving continue to look for ways to add to their roster. With a limited number of assets they are willing to trade, however, that task seems almost impossible, unless they are able to find some budget-friendly deals.
Those budget-friendly deals don't sound ideal, but given the struggles of some previously productive players, they slowly appear to be popping up across the league.

Leafs To Check In on Mangiapane?

Coming out of the holiday roster freeze, TSN's Chris Johnston and Pierre LeBrun released the third part of their 'Trade Board Matchmaker' series where they mentioned the disgruntled Andrew Mangiapane.
The 29-year-old has struggled to find a fit with the Edmonton Oilers, registering just five goals and 11 points in 40 games thus far. Carrying a no-trade clause this season, Mangiapane has full control over his destination, with the Oilers looking to 'do right' by him as noted by The Fourth Period's Dave Pagnotta.
"There's also some logic to it, though," wrote Johnston. "Toronto is low on draft capital and knows it's going to have a tough time chasing upgrades at the trade deadline as a result. The acquisition cost in this case will likely be negligible... It's also worth noting that the player has a favorable history with Leafs GM Brad Treliving dating back to their time together in Calgary."

Carrying a $3.6M cap hit for this season and next, the Leafs would have to send out some money or get some retention from the Oilers, but as Johnston noted, it wouldn't cost them the likes of Easton Cowan, Ben Danford or their earlier picks or younger prospects.
It's an avenue for the Leafs to explore, and given the history between player and GM, it shouldn't be surprising if Mangiapane chooses Toronto, if they come knocking.
