The Toronto Maple Leafs signed 20-year-old Borya Valis to a three-year entry-level contract on Saturday, and here's what we know about him so far.
As the Maple Leafs continue to roll, currently on a four-game win streak, they are looking to make a splash before the upcoming trade deadline on March 7th.
"Our staff has had a lot of interest in him for a while. He has a real good two-way game, he has offensive instincts, good size, skates well. He's one of those guys who is a late developing player."
Additionally, scout Sam Tirpak shared insight on where Valis may fit into the Leafs' organization via X:
"Likely going to play in Marlies bottom-6 next season. Very efficient all-around player that should translate to pro hockey really well right away."
Tirpak also shared some key points on who Valis is as a player:
- big (6'2/195), strong, fast, physical - shot-heavy (leads the team in shots and shot attempts, averaging ~5 shots on goal per game) - PP sniper (leads the team in PP shots) - plays all situations (3:20 ATOI on PP, 1:53 ATOI on PK, really good results on both) - leads the team in CF% and ranks 2nd in xGF%
Valis has been dominant this season with the Prince George Cougars, recording 74 points in 58 games. He is also known for his strong two-way play and defensive responsibility, making him a perfect fit for a Craig Berube-style player.
While Valis may not make an immediate impact with the big club, he will be a valuable addition to the Toronto Marlies. With his skillset, he could very well develop into an NHL-caliber player.
