Video: Joe Bowen's electric play call on Auston Matthews' record-setting goal for the Maple Leafs

Well, it was only a matter of time that Auston Matthews became the Toronto Maple Leafs' all-time scoring leader, and he did just that on Saturday night against the New York Islanders, scoring his 421st career goal, passing Mats Sundin's 420 goals with the franchise.

The play was nearly offside, but the puck was kept in by Max Domi, who fed it to Bobby McMann, who in turn spotted a wide open Matthews at the opposite circle, teeing up a one-timer for the ages.

It seems fitting that the legendary Joe Bowen was able to make the call during his retirement season, and Bowen delivered one of his most impassioned "Holy Mackinaw" catch phrases of all-time for the call.

Bowen has called plenty of Maple Leafs history over the years, but this one certainly does feel a little extra special, given the fact that his 4-decade career is coming to an end at the conclusion of this season.

The legendary "Voice of the Maple Leafs" took to social media following the win to emphasize his pride in the fact that he was able to call each and every one of Matthews' 421 career goals.

For Matthews, the moment was special. For his teammates, who cleared the bench to join him in celebration on the ice, it was special. But for Bowen, it might be one of the most important and iconic calls of a Hall of Fame broadcasting career.

The Leafs have 41 games remaining on their schedule this season. Hopefully Bowen will get to all many more Auston Matthews goals, but more importantly, I hope the Leafs can qualify for the playoffs to give Bowen the chance to do something he's waited 40-plus years to do: call a Maple Leafs Stanley Cup victory.
