The Maple Leafs' roster is set, but one longtime forward doesn't appear to be in the picture following the latest announcement from the Toronto Marlies.

After several seasons as a reliable depth forward for the Maple Leafs, it appears the David Kämpf
era is coming to an end for the big club, barring injury, of course.
Once a regular in Toronto's lineup, Kämpf is now beginning the 2025-26 season in the AHL, a move that signals an obvious and significant shift in Craig Berube's approach to the team's depth and what he expects of them.
Year after year, the Leafs have fallen short in the postseason, and management seems determined to change that pattern. Kämpf's demotion might not come as a complete surprise to fans who followed the team closely last season.
Despite his reputation as a defensively responsible center, his offensive impact has steadily declined. Last year, Kämpf tallied just five goals and 13 points through 59 games and suited up for only one playoff appearance.
With Scott Laughton
sidelined due to injury, it appeared Kämpf might get another opportunity to reclaim his spot. However, Berube's system demands not only defensive responsibility but also energy, pace, and a simplification of the game that some seem to struggle with.
These are areas where Kämpf has struggled to stand out in recent seasons. Not at all known for his physical prowess, it becomes hard for him to even begin to crack a spot on the roster. If he's not adding anything to the picture on the scoreboard, and if he's not noticeably physical and providing energy, then the idea of keeping him on the roster doesn't make much sense for Berube and company.

David Kämpf Officially Listed on Toronto Marlies' Opening Night Roster

This week, when the Toronto Marlies announced their opening night roster, Kämpf's name was included on the list, suggesting that his time with the big club is officially over.
It's worth remembering that Kämpf did enjoy moments of success in Toronto. During his career-best season three years ago, he recorded 27 points, proving that even depth players can contribute meaningfully to a team's playoff push. But, with the Leafs getting heavier, faster, and more aggressive under Berube, Kämpf's style may simply no longer fit.
Unless he can elevate his game and force his way back into the lineup, Kämpf's time in Toronto could soon come to a close. For now, the 29-year-old will have to prove his worth with the Marlies and hope the door to the NHL hasn't closed for good.
