Toronto native wants out in Edmonton and the Maple Leafs should put in a call

While the Maple Leafs swung and missed on Andrew Mangiapane this summer, they're going to be afforded another opportunity with the forward seeking a trade.
The Toronto Maple Leafs were interested in a lot of players this summer, but one that might have stood out more than some of his counterparts was Andrew Mangiapane. With his ties to Brad Treliving from their days in Calgary, as well as Toronto being his hometown, it made a lot of sense.
Unfortunately, the 29-year-old decided to sign out west, with the Edmonton Oilers. However, things haven't gone as expected in his first season with the club, and both sides could be looking for a split, as long as it makes sense for player and team.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman has reported that Mangiapane is open to a move, due to his ice time shrinking by the day.
Mangiapane has seen his usage drop significantly this season. He was averaging 15:32 ATOI in his first 28 games, but that number has since plummeted to 11:58 over his last 11 games, which has included 2 games where he saw less than 10 minutes.
Friedman also mentioned that while a trade won't be easy, there's some precedent with Mason Marchment and Phillip Danault having been moved ahead of the roster freeze. The players were frustrated and both sides came to an agreement, something that could happen in similar fashion with Mangiapane, outside of the biggest caveat, which is his no-trade clause.
The Oilers are going to have to work with Mangiapane on where he would like to be traded, and it is expected that they will try to find him a place that will be willing to give him a more prominent role.
I think there is an understanding there that if the Oilers can find something for Mangiapane with another team where he might have a bigger role, he would be willing to waive in that situation.
While we don't know for sure if Mangiapane would be willing to waive his NTC for Toronto, the Leafs would be able to give him the ice-time and role he's looking for.
Mangiapane is still under contract for one more season at a cap hit of $3.6 million, so any move here might require the Leafs to part with someone like Matias Maccelli, Max domi or Brandon Carlo. Money in, money out.
